Ways to Find Learning Objects

Browse by Discipline from the Home Page

expand

On the home page, start by choosing a discipline (for example, Language) and then a sub-discipline (for example, English). This will take you to the Disciplines & Courses page where you can then choose from all available browsing options.

Disciplines & Courses Page

expand

This page is a hierarchical list of Disciplines, Sub-disciplines, Courses, and Collections. There are two ways to access this page: choose a discipline from the discipline images on the home page (History or Language), or click "Disciplines & Courses" from the left sidebar menu.

To expand the list, click the arrows next to the titles, or the green “Expand All” button to see the entire list.

To view learning objects, click any title in the list to go directly to an alphabetized list of results. Once there, you can search within or browse the learning objects.

Click any question mark expand to see how a course is organized. You will then see an image like the one on the right that shows the course's collection. Unit, Lesson, Topic, Asset, and Other are referred to as course levels. Different courses will contain a different number of course levels, but all will follow this structure. Read more about course levels in the Glossary.

Basic Search

expand

Search the entire Repository by entering text into the main search box located in the near top right of every page. Once within a discipline or course, you can limit your search by using the search box on that page, or go back to searching the entire Repository by using the main search box.

Advanced Search

expand

Use Advanced Search to narrow your results. Search specific fields in either the entire Repository or a selected discipline by using the Advanced Search feature, and combine these searches with “and”, “or”, or “not”. You can also use truncation and wildcards and sort the search results in several ways.

Sidebar

extract

Use the sidebar to browse the entire Repository by Disciplines & Collections, Titles, Subjects, Authors, Media Formats, and Date Created, or browse the content of a particular discipline/course by all of these functions except for Disciplines & Collections.

Sorting options

register

When browsing, you have the option to sort by alphabet, course level, date created, title, author's affiliation, and course name; as well as ascending and descending order.

How to Read Metadata (item descriptions)

Read the descriptions, or metadata, of a learning object to find something relevant to your search. To see more information on an item, click the plus sign plus on the top right of any item to expand it. This will display the rest of the metadata. You can also use this plus sign feature to compare items by expanding multiple items on a single page.

Below is an example of an expanded item.

metadata

Click any question mark expand to see how the course's item is organized. You will then see an image like the one below that shows the course's collection. Unit, Lesson, Topic, Asset, and Other are referred to as course levels. Different courses will contain a different number of course levels, but all will follow this structure. Read more about course levels in the Glossary.
