Lesson 26: The United States and Vietnam, 1953-1974

  • Summary: Following World War II, the drastically different political ideologies of the Soviet Union and the United States created more than forty years of tension between the two superpowers. In the early years of the Cold War, Asia became a source of conflict for the United States such as the Korean War, Vietnam War. The war in Vietnam did immeasurable damage to the country’s faith in its government and its military reputation, the effects of which reverberate still. Built to honor the tens of thousands of American soldiers who died in Vietnam, the polished black granite of the Vietnam Memorial is a constant reminder to the nation of its involvement in Southeast Asia.
