Lesson 28: A Changing Nation

  • Summary: The 1968 presidential election marked a changing of the guard in the political landscape of the United States. The American people experienced the roller coaster of economic upswings and downturns. With the election of Richard Nixon, an office that had been dominated by Democrats and moderate Republicans for decades, was taken by a moderate conservative. The nation ended a long and tense Cold War, leaving its leaders to forge a new course for foreign policy. President Bush, who won re-election in 2004, faced a difficult and controversial presidency, including the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, Hurricane Katrina, the subprime mortgage meltdown, a ballooning federal deficit, and a struggling economy. The changes that started in the last decade of the twentieth century culminated in 2008 and the election of President Barack Obama, the nation's first black president, was sworn into office in January 2009.
